For ruining everything.

[Though that isn't entirely accurate. Humans are just as responsible. Her own father even more so. Synthetics are just easier to hate, given that there are so few of them that she actually likes.]

They started wars. Used people as living chess pieces. I was "modified" to be able to track down and dispatch them more efficiently. Though that function became impaired, no thanks to my father's tampering. [But one could argue that it wasn't the bad kind of tampering this time.]

[Strange to think that you can 'tamper' with a human being, but Firo manages to only grimace a little at that thought.]

He doesn't seem like the kinda guy who'd start a war.

[Even Firo has to admit that. No, he can see Nick as more the kind of guy who'd barge in on a fight to break it up just because he could. What a jerk. He knows she means other synthetics, of course, but he can't resist poking at the prejudice.

Firo contemplates the new information Rey's shared, though, and wonders if that'll clear up something else:]

Is that why you hit him with a shovel?

[Yep, Firo remembers her sharing that. How could he forget?]

He isn't.

[Nick is no war monger. Rey would be able to tell if he was.

[She sighs.] Didn't actually hit him with a shovel, but, um. A little.

He's a different type of synthetic, though. Not one from my world. There is apparently a significant difference in... design.

[Firo nods along.]

He's not like the homunculi in my world either. I wouldn't have thought there'd be so many people like that.

[circumitus]

[Rey could at least argue the significant difference between synthetics and homunculi, but decides against it. Firo probably knows just as much as she does.]

Well, between the three of us, I haven't met anyone else here with similar head troubles. Though that is still more than I can say where I'm from.

[Nick seems to believe that he is alone in his situation as well.]

[Firo shrugs a shoulder.]

Maybe that's a good thing. Three of us is three too many.

It wasn't that normal where I'm from, either.

Great. We can start up an elite club.

[The sarcasm is too real.]

[foundafamily]

[He manages something that's almost like a laugh.]

Don't think we'd really have anything interesting to talk about.

[circumitus]

[She scoffs as well.]

You'd be surprised.

[Come on, Firo. Don't say you all wouldn't have anything to talk about.]

[He quirks an eyebrow.]

Would you wanna stand around with people talking about memories that aren't yours? Doesn't sound like a good time to me.

No, but I wouldn't mind hanging out talking with either of you.

[Doesn't have to be about the memories, Firo. Gawd.]

They truly are family

[Firo smiles just a little and nearly concedes--he likes spending time with Rey. But there is another problem.]

Sorry, but I don't see that going too well. You know what he is. People like that don't get along with people like me.

[He's a detective. So what if he was really nice when Firo actually met him? He was probably up to something.]

[circumitus]

And I'm not supposed to get along with people like him, either. Remember? It's not like that was a figure of speech.

[She pauses.] Plus, I don't exactly have a stellar track record with authority, if you can believe that.

[Even while playing the roles of the "obedient soldier", most of Rey's past selves were always disposed to insubordination eventually. It was often their downfall, too.]

Oh yeah?

[Yeah, he can believe it. Rey's not as abrasive as some people he's met, but she seems to do her own thing.]

So why him?

[circumitus]

Don't know.

[Shrug.]

Maybe it's because it's easier to trust someone who doesn't hide what they are. Not like he could, even if he wanted to. [Nick can wear the clothes, but he'd never be able to pass for human by his "good looks".]

[foundafamily]

[Interesting. Firo just winds up with even more questions now.]

How much do you trust him?

[circumitus]

I told you -- he's like family. [Though, compared to some of her "family" that Firo is aware of...]

The good family, that is. He's trustworthy enough that he's willing to overlook the differences he has with people. That we don't always see things the same way, and he doesn't try to force that to change.

[It helps, not being preached at. Rey knows full well what kind of person she is and doesn't need someone to try and "fix" her.]

...When you put it like that, he doesn't sound all that bad.

[There may be a note of disappointment in his voice. Firo doesn't like changing his mind about people.]

[circumitus]

He isn't. You really think I would trust him like that if he was?

[Come on, Firo. Rey has questionable tastes, but she's not that bad.]

Hey, no offense, but how should I know? Besides... Like I said, it's not like I'm just gonna think the best of a guy like that.

[circumitus]

Well, I think the best of you. [Pause.] Both of you.

[And in the end, that's what matters.]

Rey is so sweet

[He does a double take and then tries to cover up his surprise with a thin smile.]

You sure you wanna risk that?

shh, don't spread the news. it's her most closely guarded secret.

[circumitus]

[Rey notes his passing expression then, but doesn't bother to heckle him for it. She just shrugs.]

What can I say? I live on the edge.
